There are two types of tooth sensitivity:

1.Dentinal Sensitivity: is caused when the dentin or middle layer of the tooth is exposed because the enamel that used to cover it gets thinner over time. Dentin is made up of pores or tubules and when these are exposed to hot or cold temperatures your nerve branches cause sensitivity.
Some causes of dentinal sensitivity are:

Water is an essential nutrient for human survival and well-being. Weight loss, an improved complexion and reduced toxins are some of the benefits that drinking eight glasses of water a day can give you!
However, we can not leave aside the fact that fluoride exists naturally in water sources and that it’s a decay-preventive element that maintains and improves your oral health. Five Facts about bottled water:

The dental community's concern over bottled water stems from the fact that most brands do not contain fluoride. Going to the dentist can be a trying experience for some, especially when it comes to cavity detection, fillings and root canals.
But newer technology is changing all that, allowing dentists to provide less-invasive procedures that cause less pain.

One such new technology is DIAGNOdent, a hand-held, portable unit designed to scan a patient’s tooth for cavities without the need to scrape the tooth. The tool is about as big as a large Sharpie and contains an LCD display. The tool measures the density of tooth enamel by comparing healthy tooth material with that of much softer tooth material inherent in cavities.

DIAGNOdent is offered at Pacific Dental Care, the office of Burbank dental resident Mariné Martirosyan, at 532 W. Glenoaks Blvd. in Glendale.

The practice has been in business in Glendale for about 13 years, said office manager Delia Fuentes. DIAGNOdent, short for diagnosis and dental, resembles a dental pick. In place of the pick, however, is a tiny laser diode that is swept across the tooth. A numerical readout tells the dentist or hygienist where a cavity might be. The higher the number on the readout, the greater the possibility that a cavity is there.

“It’s pretty accurate as far as detecting cavities,” Martirosyan said. “These days, the widespread use of fluoride in dental material and waters makes the top layer of the tooth much harder. When the teeth have deep peaks and grooves, it decays underneath the top layer. Sometimes the X-rays are very hard in detecting these initial cavities, or cavities in their early stages.”

For those with cavities in later stages, the tool is just as effective, Martirosyan said.
One of the most important advantages to this tool, she said, is that it is painless. The technology is also an incentive for patients to undergo cavity detection sooner, thus preventing more invasive and potentially painful procedures in the future.

“If they delay the cavity detection and treatment, the next treatment is like a root canal,” Martirosyan said. “It’s also very costly. This way, we can detect cavities in their early stage.”
Preventing cavities overall requires good home care and regular check-ups, she added.

Still, DIAGNOdent allows patients to become more involved in their treatments, “because they understand this better than they understand the X-ray. You hear a loud noise, and see a higher number — that’s the cavity. X-ray, you have to explain [to] them shadows, circles.”

What is Laser Dentistry?

Laser dentistry is the use of lasers to perform dental procedures and treatments. A laser is a unique device that uses light energy to perform work; they can treat targeted dental tissue while leaving surrounding tissue unaffected.

It’s this feature, among others, that allows our Glendale dentist to perform very precise procedures with little or no anesthesia because of its gentle and precise nature. Laser use in Periodontal (Gum) Disease

Periodontal or gum disease is an infection of the bone and supporting structures of your teeth. Periodontal bacteria may cause an inflammatory reaction which leads to a damage of the fibers that connect your teeth to your bones, and can create what we call a periodontal pocket.

You can keep these pockets clean with routine brushing, flossing and rinsing, but if it’s very hard for you to clean them because of the pocket’s depth, you may result having bacteria living at the bottom of these pockets, leading to chronic gum infection.

We will go around each involved tooth to remove any remains and calcified deposits that are adhering to your teeth in a process called scaling and root planning. This process will remove the mechanical irritants to your gums and supporting bone and also removes a major reserve of periodontal bacteria.

After removing the tartar and calculus, a laser is used to selectively remove diseased or infected tissues lining the pockets around your teeth. At the same time the laser will kill the bacteria that cause gum disease and promote its healing. Some lasers can help increase circulation and collagen formation at the bottom of your periodontal pockets.

What is Oral Cancer?

Our Burbank dentist defines oral cancer as a very common form of cancer characterized by an uncontrollable growth of cells that invade your oral tissues or cavities and can be critical for any person’s life if not diagnosed and treated in early stages.

Oral cancer is part of a group of cancers called head and neck cancers. It can appear in any part of your mouth or throat, but most begin in the tongue, mouth’s floor and/or soft palate. This disease can affect anyone, but the risk of getting oral cancer is higher if you are male, over age 40, and use tobacco, alcohol or have a history of head or neck cancer.

Oral Cancer Symptoms

White and/or red patches in your mouth or lips
A mouth or lip sore or blister that won't heal (longer than 2 weeks)
Mouth bleeding
Loose teeth or change in the way they fit together
Difficulty or pain when swallowing
A lump in your neck
Frequent or persistent earaches

How to Prevent Oral Cancer

Follow these tips in order to maintain a healthy mouth, proper dental hygiene, and prevent oral cancer:

How dangerous is Oral Cancer?

In the United States approximately 35,000 new cases of oral cancer are diagnosed each year, according to the American Cancer Society. About 25% of the affected people will die of the disease. Our Burbank dentist adds; "The stage at which oral cancer is diagnosed is vital to the disease’s course; when detected at its earliest stage, it’s easier to treat and cure it; when detected late, only 50% of those diagnosed will survive more than five years".

Oral Cancer Treatment

The first thing we need to know is the stage of your disease to plan the best treatment. This may require lab tests, such as; an endoscopy, Dental x-rays, Chest x-rays, CT scan or an MRI. The choice of treatment depends mainly on your general health, location of the tumor, size of the tumor, and whether the cancer has spread.

We may refer you to a specialist, or you may ask for a referral yourself. Specialists who treat oral cancer include oral and maxillofacial surgeons, otolaryngologists (ear, nose, and throat doctors), medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, and plastic surgeons.

Oral cancer treatment may include surgery, radiation therapy, or chemotherapy. Some patients have a combination of treatments

Surgery: Surgery is a very common treatment for oral cancer. The tumor in the mouth or throat is removed; sometimes the surgeon also removes lymph nodes in the neck and/or other tissues in the mouth and neck. Patients may have surgery alone or in combination with radiation therapy.

Radiation therapy: Radiotherapy is a type of local therapy which affects cells only in the treated area; it uses high-energy rays to kill cancer cells. It is used alone for small tumors or for patients who cannot have surgery. It may be used before surgery to kill cancer cells and/or shrink the tumor. It also may be used after surgery to destroy cancer cells that may remain in the area.

Doctors use two types of radiation therapy to treat oral cancer: External radiation (the radiation comes from a machine) or internal/implant radiation (the radiation comes from radioactive material placed in seeds, needles, or thin plastic tubes put directly in the tissue)

Chemotherapy: Chemotherapy uses anticancer drugs to kill cancer cells. It enters the bloodstream and can affect cancer cells throughout the body. Chemotherapy is usually applied by injection, which may be given in an outpatient part of the hospital, at the doctor's office, or at home.

Pregnancy is a very beautiful moment in a woman’s life, however hormonal changes occur in our body that alters its normal behavior. This is the reason why it’s important for us women to take good care of our teeth and gums while we are pregnant. These hormonal changes increase the risk of developing gum disease because it makes gums more sensitive, which makes it easier for gingivitis to develop, and this can affect the health of the unborn baby.

Periodontal Disease

It is very common to experience pregnancy gingivitis, identified by and uncomfortable swelling, bleeding, redness or softness in the gum tissue. A more advanced oral health condition (periodontal disease) may also affect the health of your baby.

Research has shown that an expectant mother suffering from periodontal disease might deliver a premature, low birth weight baby. As a matter of fact, these pregnant women may be seven times more likely to have a baby that is born earlier and smaller that the usual, which may increase the risk for future health problems and disabilities.

Scaling and Root Planning

If you're pregnant and receive a positive diagnose for periodontal disease, our Glendale dentist recommends a common non-surgical procedure called scaling and root planning. With this procedure the root of your tooth or teeth are deeply cleaned to remove plaque, tartar and bacterial toxins, this may reduce the risk of having premature or low weighted births.

Additionally, this procedure should reduce many of the pregnancy gingivitis symptoms.

Here are some Tips for pregnant women to follow:

Even though sweets are craved a lot when we are pregnant, these should be avoided. Always remember that the more sweets you eat, the greater chance you have of developing tooth decay, plus studies have shown that the bacteria that causes tooth decay is passed genetically from mother to child.
For precaution, during the first trimester and second half of the third trimester dental treatments should be avoided as much as possible. You need to let your dentist know about you pregnancy and have routine dental care and checkups.
Always eat a healthy, balanced diet. This is very important because your baby's first teeth begin to develop around after the third month of your pregnancy.
